Luna Middleton-Roy
QUEER OF THE YEAR AND UNSUNG HERO OF THE YEAR 2024
TELL US WHAT YOU’VE BEEN UP TO SINCE WINNING YOUR AWARD IN 2024?
Since last year's QSAs, I have graduated University and moved to Nottingham to start my PGCE. I have loved my teacher training so far and I am excited to begin a career working with young people on a much larger scale. Being able to see the ways in which school environments and cultures are changing to support young LGBTQ+ people is fantastic and I can't wait to keep getting involved in projects supporting the community both within schools and my University. I have been organising events with the PGCE LGBTQ+ Network Group and have plans to work with the Pride groups in my placement schools this year - watch this space! Back in Durham, the Queer Awareness Project is successfully up and running for another year under new management! I believe that recognition for the project at the QSAs played a significant role in its getting recognised by the University as its Best New Volunteering Initiative.
WHAT DID WINNING YOUR CATEGORY MEAN TO YOU?
Being recognised at The Queer Student Awards was unbelievable! It was a huge honour to be considered in my categories alongside such fantastic people, let along winning! The QSAs gave me huge confidence in celebrating the work I had done supporting young queer people and has pushed me to keep fighting to support the community wherever I can.
WHY DO YOU THINK THAT EVENTS LIKE THE QSAs ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOUNG LGBTQ+ PEOPLE?
Being able to celebrate the achievements of young LGBTQ+ people and recognise the hard work that goes into planning projects, being an activist and fighting for the community is invaluable. Giving these groups, individuals, employers and institutions such recognition inspires more people to get involved and helps existing projects gain momentum to grow and flourish. Never underestimate the impact that celebrating young people's achievements can have!
OUR THEME FOR 2025 IS ‘QUEER POWER’. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON HOW POWER DOES AND DOES NOT APPLY TO YOUNG LGBTQ+ PEOPLE AND/OR THE WIDER LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY?
Young people are often not recognised for the power they have in effecting change, yet play such an important role in shaping the socio-political climate. Putting Queer Power in the spotlight gives young LGBTQ+ people another chance have their voices truly heard, celebrated, and put into action.
